FreeNAS is an operating system that can be installed on virtually any hardware platform to share data over a network. FreeNAS is the simplest way to create a centralized and easily accessible place for your data.
FreeNAS is used everywhere, for the home, small business, and the enterprise. ZFS is an enterprise-ready open source file system, RAID controller, and volume manager with unprecedented flexibility and an uncompromising commitment to data integrity. It eliminates most, if not all of the shortcomings found in legacy file systems and hardware RAID devices. Once you go ZFS, you will never want to go back.
The Web Interface simplifies administrative tasks. Snapshots of the entire filesystem can be made and saved at any time. Access files as they were when the snapshot was made. Employ the Replication feature to send Snapshots over the network to another system for true offsite disaster recovery.
Build a personal FreeNAS file server for your home. Protect mission critical data and eliminate downtime with high availability options.
I love the jail setup. I love the web interface.

So much good stuff. You made my professional life better. I appreciate your work. FreeNAS leaves you feeling secure in the knowledge that anyone can operate its web interface, but you can still benefit from the power of the command line.
They had an existing NAS system that was not being used to its potential. After I rebuilt their back-up system using FreeNAS, their workflow improved by probably 5 times what they were able to do do previously.
Tim Nagle Creative Integrations. Uploading my music, pictures, videos, and documents — done. Sharing my uploads with my PS3, smart TV, and tablet — done. I have barely scratched the surface of what FreeNAS can do because it has been doing everything I want it to do.
FreeNAS has helped build our virtualization platform to this effect and has provided us with a very flexible system through with a ROI not matched by any competitor on either the Open-Source or Closed-Source market. Summary of Benchmark results. There is no optimal configuration; rather, FreeNAS can be configured to suit a particular workload:. We store the raw output of our benchmarks in a GitHub repo. Although we have measured the native performance of our NAS i. For comparison we have added the performance of our external USB hard drive the performance numbers are from a VM whose data store resided on a USB hard drive.
ZFS tuning cheat sheet
Note that the external USB hard drive is not limited by gigabit ethernet throughput, and thus is able to post a Sequential Read benchmark that exceeds the theoretical maximum. The raw benchmark data is available here. Buffer sizes vary. We use this forum post to determine the size of our SLOG:. We use gpart to initialize da4. Then we create a GB partition which we align on 4kB boundaries -a 4k :.
We perform 7 runs and take the median values for each metric e. Sequential Write. The raw benchmark data can be seen here.
FreeNAS 9. We enable the target and reboot our machine. To modify the iSCSI services settings and enable the experimental kernel driver, click the wrench icon. We perform 9 runs and take the median values for each metric e.
We want to aggressively use the L2ARC. Unfortunately, it must be set before the ZFS pool is imported i. That means we must set this variable as a tunable rather than as a sysctl :. Reboot browse the lefthand navbar of the web interface and click Reboot. Click Reboot when prompted. This has been a step backwards for us—every metric performed worse.
We suspect that disabling pre-fetch was a mistake. The raw data is available here. We chose the final configuration best IOPS, second-best sequential write, second-worst sequential read for our setup. Our workload is write-intensive and IOPS-intensive.

Tanzu Application Catalog TAC provides a way for organizations to create their own curated catalog of open-source software. For decades, operating systems have used RAM as a cache to avoid the necessity of waiting on disk IO, which is extremely slow. This concept is called page replacement. Unfortunately, the LRU algorithm is vulnerable to cache flushes, where a brief change in workload that occurs occasionally removes all frequently used data from cache.
It solves this problem by maintaining four lists:. Data is evicted from the first list while an effort is made to keep data in the second list. In addition, a dedicated cache device typically a SSD can be added to the pool, with zpool add poolname cache devicename.
The cache device is managed by the L2ARC, which scans entries that are next to be evicted and writes them to the cache device. The data stored in ARC and L2ARC can be controlled via the primarycache and secondarycache zfs properties respectively, which can be set on both zvols and datasets.
Possible settings are allnone and metadata. It is possible to improve performance when a zvol or dataset hosts an application that does its own caching by caching only metadata. One example is PostgreSQL. Another would be a virtual machine using ZFS. Top-level vdevs contain an internal property called ashift, which stands for alignment shift. It is set at vdev creation and it is immutable. It can be read using the zdb command.
It is calculated as the maximum base 2 logarithm of the physical sector size of any child vdev and it alters the disk format such that writes are always done according to it. Configuring ashift correctly is important because partial sector writes incur a penalty where the sector must be read into a buffer before it can be written. ZFS makes the implicit assumption that the sector size reported by drives is correct and calculates ashift based on that.
In an ideal world, physical sector size is always reported correctly and therefore, this requires no attention. Unfortunately, this is not the case. The sector size on all storage devices was bytes prior to the creation of flash-based solid state drives. Some operating systems, such as Windows XP, were written under this assumption and will not function when drives report a different sector size.
Flash-based solid state drives came to market around These devices report byte sectors, but the actual flash pages, which roughly correspond to sectors, are never bytes.Overview of Oracle Solaris System Tuning. Oracle Solaris Kernel Tunable Parameters.

Revision History for This Manual. This option can be considerably more cost effective than using flash for low latency commits. The size of the log devices must only be large enough to hold 10 seconds of maximum write throughput.
If no such device is available, segment a separate pool of flash devices for use as log devices in a ZFS storage pool. The F contains up to 80 independent flash modules.
Each flash module appear to the operating system as a single device. SSDs are viewed as a single device by the OS. For example, a single flash module of a flash device used as a ZFS log device can reduce latency of single lightly threaded operations by 10x.
More flash devices can be striped together to achieve higher throughput for large amounts of synchronous operations. Log devices should be mirrored for reliability. For maximum protection, the mirrors should be created on separate flash devices. Maximum protection with the F storage array is obtained by placing mirrors on separate F devices. Flash devices that are not used as log devices may be used as second level cache devices.
This serves to both offload IOPS from primary disk storage and also to improve read latency for commonly used data. Be very careful with zpool add commands. Mistakenly adding a log device as a normal pool device is a mistake that will require you to destroy and restore the pool from scratch. Individual log devices themselves can be removed from a pool. Familiarize yourself with the zpool add command before attempting this operation on active storage.
You can use the zpool add -n option to preview the configuration without creating the configuration. For example, the following incorrect zpool add preview syntax attempts to add a device as a log device:.
This is the correct zpool add preview syntax for adding a log device to an existing pool:. If multiple devices are specified, they are striped together. For more information, see the examples below or zpool 1M. ZFS is designed to work with storage devices that manage a disk-level cache. ZFS commonly asks the storage device to ensure that data is safely placed on stable storage by requesting a cache flush. For using FreeNAS, we have to configure with proper setting after the installation completes, In Part 1 we have seen how to install FreeNAS, Now we have to define the settings that we going to use in our environment.
Next, setup email notification, go to the Email tab under the Settings. Here we can define the email address to get the email notification regrading our NAS.
So switch to Account Menu in Top. Then choose Usershere you will see the root user, selecting root user you will get the modify option in left side bottom corner below the users list. Click on Modify User tab to enter the email address and password of the user and click OK to save the changes. Then switch back to Settings and choose Email to configure the email.
Enter the the username and password for authentication and save the changes by clicking on Save. Now we need to enabled Console message in the footer, to do this go to Advanced option and choose Show console messages in the footer and save the settings by clicking on Save. There are totally 8 drives available now, add them all. Next, define the Raid levels to use. To add a RaidZ same a Raid 5click on drop down list. Mirror means cloning the same copy of each drive with better performance and data guarantee.
Stripe a single data to multiple disks.
If we loose any one of the disk, We will loose the whole volume as useless. Click on Add Volume to add the selected volume layout. Adding the Volume will take little time according to our drive size and system performance. Data-set is created inside the volume, which we have created in above step. Data-sets are just like folder with compression level, Share type, Quota and much more features. Next, enable Quota by clicking on advance menu to get the Quota.
Select Permission recursively to get the same permission for every files and folders which created under the share. Those shares can be accessible from windows machines. Note, this will be differ for your network. Next, select All Directories to allow to mount every directory under this share.Post a Comment. At 45 Driveswe make really large capacity storage servers.
When we first started out, our machines were relatively slow, and focused on cold-to-lukewarm storage applications; but our users pushed us to achieve more performance and reliability. This would make it practical and advantageous to edit directly off of a central server, at increased performance levels, with the security of RAID, and without the overhead of transferring files before and after editing.
With servers such as ours, this is real and achievable, and delivers a better and more productive experience at work station.
But to achieve this performance gain in video editing, you must be able to achieve single client transfers at a speed that approaches saturation of the 10GbE connection. The Holy Grail — Smokin' fast single client transfers from massive centralized storage In working with our users, it has become clear that the "Holy Grail" of media storage in video editing is centralized storage all users can access, at speeds that are greater than what internal SSDs are capable of. This allows Video Editors to work directly from the server, while resting assured all their data is safe and secure on a redundant RAID array.
This can be achieved with a Storinator Massive Storage Pod, 10GbE network, and a fast workstation with plenty of RAM, but to really get the most out of this setup, you need to tune things to move from 'out of the box' performance up to single client transfers that saturates 10GbE. The following examples show how to configure your NAS and client computers to achieve maximum performance in a wide range of setups.
With the proper understanding of how to set up your storage network, we believe our hardware can provide you this "Holy Grail" all video producers dream about. On the window that pops up, navigate to the "Ethernet Tab".

What protocol are you using for the remote file sharing? Is the traffic going through equipment that's capable of carry a full gig the whole way? How about the client system's performance?
And is there potentially any extra load or any disk thrashing occurring at the same time as the slower transfers?
